About Me
Hello!! And thank you for visiting my blog. I like to think of it as my ‘country road’ journey to Vet School – full of twists and turns, ups and downs, sometimes fun, sometimes stressful, often surprising, never straightforward, and full of animals in various states of mortality.
I’ve already completed a BSc Zoology degree, so I’m applying to vet school as a graduate applicant. In my early 20′s, it also means I’m classed as a ‘mature’ student, but you’ll have to judge for yourself on that. The other thing that this means is that I’m not eligible for any tuition fee loans, so (unless I waste away from living on 8p value noodles) it’s also about my struggle to survive on, well, no income. For the next five years. Yikes.
I hope you enjoy reading through my ramblings, and please do leave a message, I’d love to hear from you!

Hi!
Just wanted to say hello! I found your blog somehow (likely via someone elses vet-related blog, mmm procrastination from schoolwork leads me to all sorts of fun websites!) but I really enjoy reading about your experiences!
I’m currently a second year veterinary student at the University of Florida, and I’m married to a lovely Englishman. We’d love to (and if everything goes to plan – we will!!) move to England when I graduate in two and a half years, so I love reading about vet experiences from the POV of someone across the pond!

Hellooo.
Just a note to say hi- and tell you how much I love reading your blog. I just found it a couple of days ago and it’s pretty fab. I’m new to the world of blogging but I’m in a fairly similar situation to you. English student hoping to get into vet school (although I’m a few years off even applying).
Anyhoo, I really hope you get into college. Please keep updating about where you apply and how you get on. And good luck writing your PS. It all sounds bloody terrifying.
Best of luck!
Jen

Hello Liz,
I’ve found your blog today and damn, it’s GOOD!

I am an unhappy Graphic Design student (luckily at 2yr course only) that only now gained the courage to fulfill her lifetime dream of being a veterinarian. It’s quite schizophrenic because besides GD I am also revising Chemistry and re-learning it because I was a C student in Chem at grammar school and I don’t remember some things at all or I never knew them actually…hah..
It encourages me to know that there are other people in the world who decided to try Vet Med after some other school too….I am nervous about how I pay back the fees to my mom in case I get accepted???? My GD school is paid but Vet Med is free for me, that’s how nicely it goes in Slovakia & Czech republic
Besides Vet Med entrance exams I will be also trying Biology & Pharmacy but we will see how it goes!
I will keep on stalking your blog
)))

Thanks Mia
And feel free to keep on stalking!
Good luck with Vet School – it\’s definitely an achievable dream so keep on plugging away! I know, the money is also a big worry for me, but if you can find people that are willing to help you out and let you pay them back later on then I think it\’s worth it for the career of your dreams! Go for it!

Hi Liz! I was just randomly procrastinating from trawling through Mike Jones’ lectures on oral microbiology when I came across your blog! Reading it reminded me of how I felt this time last year – seems like such a long time ago now! First year at Nottingham vet school flies by at a crazy pace, but I’m still loving every minute of it (and getting used to the Thursday morning hangovers!). Hopefully we’ll cross paths at some point, I daresay you’ll probably already have met a few of last year’s prelims (I lived with Clem last year).
Hope you have a great first year on the farm!

Hello Marjanne,
Well it’s always a tough decision, but I can tell you there are people your age on my course, and having already qualified as a doctor you would be in a good position for one of the four year courses in the UK (you don’t state where you are from so I don’t know how useful that is to you). Allergies to horses can be annoying but would not be a barrier to you becoming a vet. If you are thinking of the UK then funding can be a major issue for mature students, but that is something you would have to consider for your own situation. I would recommend finding a vet practice to do some ‘work experience’ at – it may be weird at 34 to be going back to this sort of thing, but it would be necessary for your application, and will help you to decide if vet med is for you. Whatever you decide, good luck. It can be a very tough decision, particularly for mature students, but I can safely say that so far for me it is the best one I’ve ever made.
