Today is the day…

…I have accepted my offers!!  Pretty much my whole blog so far has been leading up to this point (NB this is all still dependent on getting that B in chemistry, but I’m on an A so far so it’s looking hopeful!).  So, are you ready?  Drum roll please.   For my Veterinary Education, I have chosen:

The School of Veterinary Medicine and Science, University of Nottingham!!  Hurrah!!  *fanfares and ticker tape all other things exciting* (Actually it wasn’t quite that dramatic – just a click of a button and a pop up window saying ‘You have accepted an offer’).

I have put RVC as my second choice.  Which is a bit strange because they have asked for an A in Chemistry, so if I didn’t get the B for Notts then I definitely wouldn’t have got the A!  But I would rather be in that position than accept one of my unconditionals and then suddenly be faced with needing to find £20,000 in a month.  Funny, that.

Will put more on my reasons for selection later, but HURRAH!!!!   This day has seemed so far off for so long and now it’s finally arrived!!  :D   They even have their own breed of cows at Nottingham…

More highs!

So what do you want first, the good or the bad news?

Let’s go for the bad first… well, it’s not entirely bad, but those two Patterdale Terriers have been rehomed together.  So actually, it’s pretty good news for them.  Obviously it’s disappointing for us, but at the end of the day the dogs will be happier together so it’s the best thing for them.  And we will keep on looking – there is a dog out there somewhere waiting for us to rehome it, I’m sure of it!

The good news… I heard back from my last application today – and I received an offer there too!  This one is for the Royal Veterinary College, University of London.  I am absolutely completely and utterly gobsmacked that I have four offers – I never, ever expected to even get a choice, let alone get all positive outcomes!  I’m so so happy about it, and SO glad that I didn’t let the fear of not getting in stop me from applying.  I owe thanks to an awful lot of people for helping me get to this stage, and am already in the process of writing emails and cards to those who’ve helped me along the way – I definitely couldn’t have got here by myself, and just having people believe in you is a great great thing!  I loved RVC when I first looked around (back in 2003!), and I’m so happy to be given an offer there… however, Nottingham has stolen my heart, and I will be putting it down as my first choice in the next few days.  Crazy.  Brilliant.  :D

Just got the final push with the chemistry now… wish me luck! :)

Highs

This blog is supposed to be about the ‘Highs and Lows of a Veterinary Student In-The-Making’.  Well this week, I have to say, it’s been mainly highs.  I have been so ridiculously excited since Nottingham rang last week that I have had serious problems sleeping this week!  The week was topped off with celebratory drinks with a local vet that I know on Friday, followed by meeting up with some school friends on Saturday, and some uni friends on Sunday.  What a week.  It was a good one.  A very good one.

It’s made me reflect a bit too – it’s been an extraordinary year of ‘Highs and Lows’.  I’m not denying it’s taken blood, sweat, tears and more (a huge amount of poo to shovel, for example).  I try to keep the personal and negative stuff away from this blog, but Dad’s stroke recovery has made things pretty tough in recent months.  But in the past few weeks, things seem to have started falling into place and really looking forward – both for me and for my family.  It’s funny how life goes like that sometimes.

Exciting Post

Notts Magnet

My postie-stalking campaign reached its climax today, as I received my offer letter through from Nottingham. An exciting day in the life of Vet Liz! It was also hand-signed by the Dean of the Vet School, which says a lot in my opinion. Enclosed with the letter was the magnet pictured above. Now, what better criteria to choose your Vet School than on the quantity and quality of freebies they send you?!

Excitement Galore!

Lamb 120 - the little orphan with the big personality!

Ah, so many things to write about.   I have yet to update on my week spent lambing, but I will write about that soon.  I had the best week, and really got thrown in at the deep end, with lots of practical experience.  I also saw some mixed practice while I was there, which was awesome, and has got me thinking about different possible paths for my veterinary career!

There is also the good news that interviews are OVER.  February has been a long and stressful month in that respect, but I have been pleased that I managed to give them what I feel was my best.  It’s back to the chemistry now, which I am feeling more positive about now that I’ve got the time to really sit down and concentrate on it all.  I thought March was also going to be a long month, in that I wasn’t expecting to hear back from the rest of the vet schools until around the end of the month… which brings me onto my last (but by no means least) piece of news…

I have been offered a place at the University of Nottingham Vet School!!  I am so crazily happy and excited about this!  I received an (unexpected – wasn’t expecting to hear back until the end of March) phone call today from the chap who did the practical assessment at my interview, who told me the good news.  He must have thought I was a jabbering idiot by the end of the phone conversation, because I didn’t quite know what to say, but he was so nice and has told me that my offer is conditional upon me getting a B in my chemistry in the summer (which although will not be easy by any means, pleases me in that it takes the pressure off having to achieve an A – although I’ll still aim for that anyway!).  I am *so* happy.  The course at Nottingham is very different to the other universities, in that it is clinically-integrated from day one… meaning I’ll be getting my hands dirty very early on – just how I like it!  There is also the fact that Nottingham charge normal undergraduate fees, even for graduate students… meaning that I’ve potentially just saved £85,000… wow.

So all in all, I’m one very happy lady right now! :D

Guess who just got their first offer from vet school??

ME!!!!!!! :D

I don’t quite know what to write. I need to let this sink in (and stop jumping around like a lunatic and phoning everyone who has remotely helped me, ever) before I can construct coherent sentences.

So basically, here’s the deal:
Conditional offer from University of Edinburgh. Not quite sure about the conditions yet as it’s not very clear, but it’s definitely on the condition that I can pay the fees (so yes, very mixed feelings despite the extreme excitement), and that I get one more week’s work experience at a mixed practice – I’d LOVE to!!

Going to go and start breathing again, and will check back soon!!
